The latest winter storm to hit the sierra’s couldn’t decide between rain and snow. Last friday saw snow levels as low as 6700 feet with accumulations of 20-30 inches at 8000 feet and above. I got to ski Northstar at around 2 pm and can confirm the upper mountain was deep and filling in nicely with a heavy layer of snow.
On friday night and saturday morning warmer temps brought in the rains, and with all of that recent snowfall now be melted, I knew the rivers would be raging. We raced over to the Upper South Yuba on the western side of Donner Summit to check out a rapid called “east meets west.”
Immediately below “east meets west.”
